Resided in West Des Moines, IowaMary Louise Dougherty, 91, passed away Monday, December 24, 2018, at Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines, IA. Services will be held 10:30 am Friday, December 28, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Cemetery in Cumming, Iowa.
Mary Lou was born April 11, 1927, in Morehead City, NC, to Louis and Ola Bell Norris. She married Joseph Dougherty June 8, 1957 and they enjoyed 53 years together.
Mary Lou worked as a Director of Admitting and Outpatient Services for Mercy Medical Center before retiring in 1989. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Women's Guild. Mary truly enjoyed attending her knitting and Bridge groups and volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul. She and Joseph loved to travel, spending many summers in Ireland and made some long-lasting friendships with those they met on their travels. They also liked to travel to San Diego in their retirement, enjoying the warmer weather and sunshine.
Mary Lou is survived by her children, Richard Dougherty of Kansas City, MO, Carol (Robert) Lenihan of Urbandale, IA, Kevin Dougherty of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Laura (Scott) Dial, Jeremy (Lauren) Dougherty, Joseph Dougherty, Daniel Lenihan, Sean Lenihan, Colin Lenihan, Christopher Lenihan, Finan Dougherty; as well as many relatives and wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Finan Dougherty; father, Louis Jerome Norris; mother, Ola Bell Headen; and brother, Jerry Norris.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 am - 10:30 am Friday, December 28, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church
