Mrs. Melissa Alcock, a resident of the Sloan Community for almost sixty years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Hennum Sunday morning after an illness of some duration. Melissa Woolf was born Feb. 2, 1841 in Highland County, Ohio. With her parents she came to Iowa when a girl. The family traveled in a covered wagon. The family made their home near Winterset, Iowa.

She was married to John Alcock in September of 1873 in Madison County, Iowa. Into this family two children were born, Mrs. James Hennum of Sloan and Clarence Alcock of Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Alcock came to Monona County, in 1882 where they resided until their coming to Sloan in 1918. Mr. Alcock passed away in 1921 after which time Mrs. Alcock lived alone in her Sloan home until six years ago when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. James Hennum. Since the time of her husband’s death, Mrs. Alcock also spent her winters in the Hennum home. She passed away Sunday August 10 in her 94th year. Patient and enduring in suffering with a strong yet childlike faith in God marked the years of her life to the end.

In her early life, her father was a minister in what was then known as the Christian Union. Mrs. Alcock herself was quite advanced as a student of the Holy Scriptures.

Funeral services were held in the Sloan Christian Church with M. C. Miller, pastor of the church officiating. Burial took place on the Sloan cemetery with Hilts Funeral Home in charge. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Andrews, Mrs. Florence Dean and Clarence Larson. Mrs. Anna DuBois at the piano. Pallbearers were the grandsons.
