October 27, 1943 ~ September 7, 2018 (AGE 74)Funeral Services for John Tuttle, age 74, of Norwalk, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 13th at Ashworth Road Baptist Church in West Des Moines. Burial will take place around 1 p.m. in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials to the church or to Madison County 4H will be accepted.
A visitation with John's family will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 12th at the church. In addition, there will be open viewing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O'Leary Funeral Services in Norwalk prior to going to the church on Wednesday afternoon.
John Joseph Tuttle, the son of Charles Oran and Margaret (nee: Guion) Tuttle, was born on the family farm on October 27, 1943 near Podunk Center in Madison County, Iowa. John started kindergarten in a one room school house in Yale, then attended Lorimor schools, and graduated from Winterset High School with the Class of 1962. John served his country honorably in the United States Army during Vietnam. Following his service he worked for Richard Stanley as a farm-hand near Cumming, Iowa. During this time he met his future wife, Ruth Ilene Flinn. They were married on December 28, 1968 at St. John’s Hall in Cumming and together made their home in a few locations such as Cumming, Johnston, and Churchville before moving to Norwalk in 1981.
John worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Norwalk as a rural and city mail carrier. He later worked as a Farm Manager for Wittern Group, and after that worked as a bus driver, custodian, security, and building maintenance supervisor in various buildings for the Des Moines Public School System. John retired from the Des Moines School System and spent the following summer and fall organizing his extensive antique tool collection. For the last several years John worked for the Norwalk Public Schools driving various routes primarily the “Happy Bus” #7. John was an extensive travel planner and enjoyed traveling with his family, especially his grandkids, in the RV.
John was a member of the Ashworth Road Baptist Church, where he volunteered as an Adult Sunday School Teacher. He was a life-member of the Cumming American Legion Post 562 (past state commander), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Norwalk Masonic Lodge, the Zig-Zag-Zig Shrine, Gideon’s International, and served a Norwalk City Council Member.
John passed away Friday evening, September 7, 2018 following a long struggle with congestive heart failure. He lived 74 years, 10 months, and 11 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Charles Tuttle, Jr., George (Mary) Tuttle, William “Larry” Tuttle, Paul Tuttle and Melvin Tuttle; and a granddaughter, Cassidy Anne Tuttle in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ilene of Norwalk; three sons, Johnny of Norwalk, Shane (Lori) of Winterset, and Tristen of Norwalk; two grandchildren Samantha and Drew; his siblings, Tom (Donna) Tuttle of Peru, Bob Tuttle of Winterset, Joan Odell of Northfield, MN, Blanche Dykes of Des Moines, Betty (Dan) Lee of the state of Oregon, Judy Leedy of Des Moines, Kelvin (Carol) Tuttle of Brooklyn Park, MN, Janet Moore of Crystal, MN, Alvin Tuttle of Mission, TX, and Dottie (Dan) Scharber of Northfield, MN ; and three sister-in-laws, Shirley, Donna, and Cora Tuttle.
