LORIMOR — Alvan Gibbs, 49, a farmer who lived 4 1/2 Miles northwest of Lorimor, ended his life this morning by firing a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle into his forehead. He died about 8:25 a. m., a half hour or more after he had wounded himself.
Sheriff J. R. (Tooie) Ewing said Gibbs had been in poor health recently and had seemed despondent. Ewing and Deputy Sheriff Jack H. Heutink were called to the Gibbs farm about 8 a. m., when Mrs. Gibbs found her husband dying.
Gibbs shot himself while he was alone in a wash house on the farm in northeast Union county. He and Mrs. Gibbs had been doing the chores. Mrs. Gibbs left to return to the house to prepare breakfast, she found her husband with the bullet wound in he head.
A doctor from Lorimor was called and remained with Gibbs until he died. Gibbs did not regain consciousness. He died about an hour later.
The reason for Gibbs taking his own life were not determined. However, his recent poor health is believed to have been the cause.
Gibbs had lived in Madison county before moving to the Union county farm some time ago.
He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Anita Eilts; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs Carrie Gibbs, who lives in the western part of the country; a brother, Wright Gibbs in the Lorimor community; and several other brothers.
His body is at the Watts funeral home here. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending word from Mrs. Gibbs’ brother, who is with the army overseas. The Red Cross is making and effort to contact him.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
