Rev. John McCauley was born in Dunferneline, Scotland, April 30, 1840, and died at Anita, Iowa, April 15, 1899, aged 58 years, 11 months and 15 days.

At the age of two years he came with his parents to Markham, Canada, near Toronto.

He was converted at the age of 14 years, and united with the Christian Church, better known as the “New Lights.”

He was married to Miss Margaret Hook, December 18, 1858. To them were born 2 sons and 7 daughters. One of the daughters died in her infancy.

About the year 1859 he united with the New Mennonite Church, of which he was a member until 1871, when he was received as a minister into the Canada Conference of the Evangelical Association. He traveled Oxford Circuit, Canada Conference, with Rev. John Lingelbach. In the spring of 1877 he removed to Iowa and became a member of the Iowa Conference.

He was ordained elder by Bishop J. J. Esher, Bishop W. W. Orwig assisting, at Laporte, Iowa.

He served the following fields of labor in the order mentioned: Oxford, Canada, 1 year; Winterset, Ia., 3 years; Green Castle, 1 year; Genoa, 2 years; Red Oak, nearly 3 years; Page, 1 year; Ringgold, 1 year; Thayer, 3 years; Corning, 3 years; Neola, 1 year; Harlan, 2 years; Lorimor, 3 years; Anita, 2 years; in all 26 years. Six hundred souls confessed Christ and united with the Church under his labors.

Bro. McCauley was a man of deep piety and transparent honesty; almost painfully exact in every detail of his business transactions, lest he should be thought not strictly upright. His life was indeed a light of the world and a benediction upon all who came within the sphere of his influence. His preaching was always practical and eminently biblical and with that holy unction which comes only by earnest prayer and communion with God. As a faithful Christian and an earnest minister of the Gospel, Bro. McCauley has left us an example worthy of emulation. We will cherish his memory and profit by the beautiful example that he has left us.

The funeral services were conducted by the writer. Text: 2 Tim. 4: 6, 8. The pastors of the M. E. and Congregational Churches of the town assisted. Rev. M. Gruener, of the Iowa Conference, was also present. The remains were interred at Harlan, Iowa, where one of the daughters resides. - J. H. Yaggy.
