Gertrude Irene York was born the daughter of Calvin and Rose Oberholtz Shook on June 5, 1913 at the family home in Baker Township, Guthrie County.

Gertie, as she was known, drove her own team of horses to country school No. 7, which is now in the Panora Museum Park. She graduated from Panora High School in 1932. She worked on the farm and helped raise her sister and two brothers.

Gertie helped her mom feed men for thrashing, corn shelling, hay baling, and corn picking. They had two very large gardens, which helped feed everyone. They had no running water or electricity. Gertie did some outside work doing painting and hanging wallpaper. Sunday’s were a great day for the young people to play croquet at the Shook home and enjoy lemonade with Gertie.

Gertie and A. P. York were married on May 5, 1934. This union was blessed with one daughter, Bonnie. Gertie and A. P. worked for Roy Hodges in Mallard. They sometimes helped a priest break rocks on Sunday afternoons for the Grotto in West Bend.

They moved southeast of Earlham where they farmed, until they moved north of Redfield where they farmed until their retirement in 1974. Gertie always had a large flower garden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, A. P. York, a daughter, Bonnie Baker, and four brothers, Glenn Shook, Gerald Shook, Carl Shook, and Clyde Shook.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy L. Davies of Panora, a son-in-law, James Baker of Redfield, and two grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham, and Redfield was in charge of arrangements.
