Osceola, IowaEsther Evangeline Smith, daughter of James Franklin Caudill and Fannie Eldridge Caudill was born March 20, 1922 in Lewis, Iowa and passed from this life Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Glen Oaks in Urbandale at 96 years of age.
Her parents and brothers and sisters moved from Rowan County, Kentucky to Iowa before she was born. Esther had many cherished memories of friends and teachers in country schools she attended as a child. She graduated from high school in Peru, Iowa in 1939.
She was united in marriage to Donald Leonard Smith on August 7, 1941 at the Murray Jamboree in Murray, Iowa and they enjoyed 69 years of marriage. Five children blessed this union.
Esther was a farm wife working alongside her husband. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, listening to gospel music and spending time with her family. She was a Sunday school teacher and active member of Grace Baptist Church in Winterset, but in recent years she has been attending Broadhorn Church near Truro.
Those relatives who preceded Esther in death were her parents; son, Aaron David Smith, husband, Donald Leonard Smith; sister, Gertrude (Palmer) Sorlien, brother-in-law, Ray Dealy, sister, Jewel (George) Utterson, brother, Walter (Grace) Caudill, brother, James Dorsie (Dorothy) Caudill, sister, Fannie Dessie (Jack) Kennington, brothers-in-law Willard (Helen) Smith, Richard Smith, and Darrell Smith, as well as her granddaughter, Danielle Porter.
Esther leaves to cherish her memory; son, Larry D. (Elizabeth) Smith of Truro, IA, son, Terry A. (Ladonna) Smith of Winterset, IA; daughter, Barbara J. Pfeiffer of Winterset, IA; daughter, Rebecca E. (Tim) Porter of Peru, IA; grandchildren, Shawn Smith, Dawn (Floyd) Jackson, Regina Johnson, Bret (Karen) Smith, Karonna (Mark) Dorr, Irina (Trevor) Allen, Tiffany Pfeiffer, Ryan Pfeiffer, Leah Porter, Lindsey Porter, Matt (Beth) Porter, 33 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Betty Smith and Hazel Smith, as well as other relatives and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be directed to her family for a fitting tribute to be decided at a later time.
