Carol Brittain, 79, of Des Moines, formerly of Madison County, died Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

A visitation with family present will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 14, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines with burial to follow in the North McDonald Cemetery in Madison County. Memorials may be directed to the Westminster Presbyterian Church and online condolences can be left at ochiltree.com.

Carol Ann Brittain was born May 29, 1939 in Jefferson Township, Madison County, Iowa, the youngest child of a family of seven of Clarence and Mary (Brayman) Brittain. She graduated from De Soto High School and went to work for Equitable of Iowa, where she worked for over 30 years. She graduated from Drake University by attending night school.

Carol was a very active and social person. A founding member of the Des Moines Volkssport Association, she won many race walks. Starting in the late 1950’s she travelled the world with her sister, Mary Jane Brittain going abroad every other year while working. After retirement she went every year and many times more often. Above all else, Carol was a caring sister, aunt, great aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.

Carol is survived by sisters, Evelynn Hubbard of Winterset; Mary Jane Brittain of Waukee; nephews and nieces, Clark Brittain of De Soto; Jason Brittain of Cheyenne; Wayne Aldrich of Tucson, AZ; Dennis Aldrich of Van Meter, Loren Aldrich of Colorado; Susan Strause of Danville; Nancy Hansen of Bagley; Ron Brittain of Newport News, VA; Cheryl Thompson of Des Moines; Steve Brittain of Dallas, TX; Shirley Sevde of Waukee; Randy Brittain of Adel; Mike Brittain of Woodward; David Brittain of Dallas Center and special cousin, Donna Jones of Des Moines. In addition numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces; extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mary Brittain; brothers, Joe, Walter and Gene Brittain; sister, Ruth Aldrich and five nephews.
