Dorothy May Brooks

Dorothy May Brooks, daughter of Ernie Cloyd Youmans and Edith Gertrude (Frank) Youmans was born January 31, 1920 in Peru, IA, and passed from this life May 23, 2018, at 98 years of age.

Dorothy graduated from Winterset High School in 1937 with a Teacher Training Certificate, however; she was not old enough to teach. Dorothy began working for Easter's who owned the grocery store in St. Charles, which is where she met Dean Brooks.

Dorothy and Dean were united in marriage on October 29, 1939 in Truro, Iowa and two sons, Thomas and Gary, blessed this union. Following Dean's military service, Dorothy and Dean purchased the grocery store in St. Charles from Easter's in May 1958; they owned and operated the grocery store for 24 years until they retired and sold the store in May of 1982.

Dorothy and Dean traveled many years to Tropic Star in Pharr, Texas to spend and enjoy the winter months. Dorothy was a member of the St. Charles Christian Church which later became St. Charles Parish. She was also a 50-year member of the Eastern Star in St. Charles.

Dorothy lived in St. Charles most of her life; Dorothy moved to Madison Square in Winterset, IA in July of 2016 where she resided until her recent illness.

Those relatives who preceded Dorothy in death were her parents, husband, Dean Brooks, sisters, Colleen Hall, Thelma Armstrong, and Geraldine Johnson, and grandson, Ryan Brooks.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory; son, Tom Brooks of Des Moines, IA, son, Gary (Linda) Brooks of St. Charles, IA, 4 grandchildren, Carrie Brooks of Des Moines, Angela (Clint) Schramm of Omaha, NE, Nicole (Jeff) Dingeman of Pella, IA, T. J. Brooks (Liz Wakeman) of Des Moines, IA, brother, Gene Youmans of Texas, 11 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to her family for a fitting tribute to be decided at a later date.
