MARY WELKER IS DEAD AT 100

Mrs. Mary Ella Welker, 100, died Monday at a nursing home after a heart attack. She celebrated her centennial anniversary Apr. 14.

She was born in Winterset, the eighth of 14 children of Rev. Robert Matthews, a Methodist preacher and farmer.

She moved to Des Moines as the wife of Isaac W. Welker, and had lived here more than 50 years. For the last eight years, Mrs. Welker lived at the Boley Nursing Home, 105 E. Army Post road.

Until recently she was an avid baseball fan, listening to games on the radio, and spoke proudly of a grandson who is a baseball coach. A veteran quilter, she was making quilts until she was past 80.

Surviving are two sons; Wilber O. and Allen Welker, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A Methodist all her life, Mrs. Welker was a member of Trinity Church. He husband who died in 1932 at the age of 87, was a blacksmith.
