Page 4, Column 5Jacob Fredrick Ringgenberg, son of Peter and Anna Ringgenberg, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, April 2, 1854. His father moved with the family to Polk county, Iowa, when Fred, as he was always called was 13 years of age. They entered the land near Ankeny, where his daughter is now living. He returned to Ohio and was married to Charlotte Marmett in 1885. To this union was born his only child, Clara, now Mrs. Guy Zelle.
They moved to a farm six miles north of Winterset where his wife died. He was married to Mrs. May Brittain Hammock on June 25, 1908. While in Ankeny he was for some years mayor of the town, and one of the organizers of the Ankeny bank. He was a most generous giver when the Ankeny churches were built and helped in every good cause. He was a prominent Odd Fellow, but gave up his membership in later years.
He was confirmed in the German Evangelical church when sixteen years old. After coming to Madison county he joined the North River United Brethren church, where he retained his membership till the time of his death. He remained active until July 4th, when he had a stroke of apoplexy, which rendered him unconscious for several days. When he regained consciousness, he talked much of his Saviour’s forgiving love, and assured his family that he was at peace with God and asked them to meet him in Heaven. After a few days he lost consciousness again and died Sunday afternoon, July 27, aged 70 years, 3 months and 25 days.
He leaves besides his wife and daughter and three grandchildren, a step son, Ralph Hammock, three brothers, Sam of Rochester, Minnesota; Charles, of Claresmore, Oklahoma, and John of Des Moines; also two sisters, Mrs. Daniel Allerman and Mrs. John Allerman, living in Des Moines. Besides these he leaves a host of friends who will ever remember his genial kindliness and thoughtfulness of others.
Rev. N. A. Hollingshead, pastor of the North River U. B. church conducted a service in the home on Monday afternoon and the body was then taken to the old homestead in Polk county, which is the home of his daughter. The service was held in the German Evangelical church northwest of Ankeny Tuesday afternoon and interment made in the Lincoln cemetery.
