Robert “Bob” Eckardt died of cancer at Kavanagh Grand Hospice, on Sept. 15, 2004. He was born in Madison County on April 11, 1930, to Gertrude Estell Eckardt and Lloyd Eckardt. He was 74.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. He and Marianne Staley were married June 4, 1954. They had made their home in Des Moines since 1956 when he graduated from Drake University. He was an insurance underwriter and had Eckardt Insurance Agency until he retired in 1990. Recently he was a part-time driver for Neighbor Care, delivering medications to nursing homes. He enjoyed driving and traveling, gathering Greenfield relatives together for frequent reunions, playing pinochle and bridge, watching sporting events on TV, Dr. Phil and country music.
He was a member of the Methodist Church. The American Legion and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Larry Rice.
Mr. Eckardt is survived by his wife; and his special little white poodle, Pucci; Also surviving are his sister, Shirley Rice of Murray; his brother, Dean Eckardt and wife Carolyn Eckardt of Ankeny; niece, and nephews; other relatives and two special cousins, Earl Estell and family of Norwalk and J. D. McCoy and family of Buena Park, Calif.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Eckardt’s life was Sept. 18 at Westover Funeral Home. Cremains will be cared for by his family at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Eckardt’s name to In Trust Hospice or Kavanagh Grand Hospice or the family.
