AUGUST VAUDT, COMMUNITY LEADER DIES SUDDENLY ON THURSDAY, 20TH

August Vaudt, Sr., a popular member of the Whittemore community for many years passed away suddenly last Thursday afternoon, August 20. Mr. Vaudt had been working in his garden when he collapsed shortly after the noon hour. Several years ago he had suffered a stroke but had since been in general good health.

Mr. Vaudt was born on May 12, 1877 at Dexter, Iowa and in April 14, 1901 was married to Clara Kneuper at Van Meter. In 1913 the couple moved to a farm a mile south of Whittemore and remained there until October, 1941 when they retired and moved into town.

He is survived by his wife and eight children. They are Walter, August Jr., Mrs. Anna Behnke and Mrs. Louis Greinert, all of here; Mrs. E. J. Butler and Mrs. Fred Rhoda of Elmore, Minnesota; Clara Vaudt of Estherville; and the Rev. Erwin Vaudt of Aitkin, Minnesota.

Also surviving are two brothers, William of here and Herman of Farnhamville, Iowa. There are twenty-four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

August Vaudt was a leader in the community and church affairs. He was a leader in forming the Tri-County Cooperative Drying Association whose plant here is now well established, and one of the organizers of the Whittemore Co-op Locker. For 28 years he served as a director of the Farmer’s Creamery and was on the board of directors of the Whittemore Elevator for 20 years. He was a great booster of the community and staunchly backed the swimming pool project for Whittemore. Mr. Vaudt served several terms as a member of the Town Council.

As a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran congregation here, he served as deacon and served a number of years as chairman of the school board.

A most affable and fair-minded gentleman, Mr. Vaudt will be sorely missed by his great number of friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 22 at two in the afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church here, with Rev. P. G. Weinhold in charge. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery at Whittemore. Pall bearers were Gene, Calvin and Harlan Vaudt, Gene Maahs, Carroll Schmeling and John Struecker.
