Jessie M. Penn, daughter of Henry and Charlotte Griffin, was born April 30, 1882 near Winterset, Iowa. She departed this life July 25, 1956 in the University Hospital, Iowa City after a long illness at the age of 74. She was the eldest in a family of nine children.

She was united in marriage to Edmund Penn, January 30, 1901 at Winterset, Iowa. To this union was born four daughters.

She spent most of her life in Madison County except for a few years in Oklahoma and California, and has spent the last seven years in Panora.

Mrs. Penn was a member of the Christian Church of Winterset, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her father and mother and one sister. Surviving are her four daughters: Mrs. Opal Josephine Branson of El Monte, California; Mrs. Fay Goldie Hirsch of Norwalk, Iowa; Mrs. Pear Lank of Adair, Iowa; and Mrs. Ruby Minter of Panora, Iowa. She also leaves to mourn her passing nine grandchildren one great grandchild, four brothers, and three sisters: Ray Griffin of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Roy Griffin of Odessa, Texas; twin brothers, Charles of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Ora Griffin of Grand Junction, Colorado; Mrs. Helen Reber of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Mrs. Ruth Pilkington of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Effie Marsh of Hinton, Oklahoma. Beside her immediate family and many other relatives and friends remain to mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Beidelman Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Brooks, pastor of the Christian church officiating. Interment was in the Brethren cemetery. Casketbearers were Earl Gibson, Homer Canady, Jesse Brown, Fred Whitman, Orville Morlan and Francis Culver.
