June 28, 1941 - February 24, 2018

Robert “Bob” Schwingendorf, 76, of Winterset, previously of Munster, Indiana, died February 24, 2018, at the West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. Funeral Services are planned for 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 1, with burial in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and/or the Wounded Warrior Project. Online condolence may be left at ochiltree.com.

Robert James Schwingendorf, son of Orville and Blanche (Miller) Schwingendorf, was born June 28, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana. He graduated from Hammond High School in 1959 and continued his education at Purdue University. Bob played football for the Boilermakers and obtained two Master’s Degrees from Purdue. Bob met Kathryn Cougill Hindmarch while teaching at George Rogers Clark High School, and they were united in marriage on May 4, 1968, in Hammond, Indiana. He then served in the United State Army during the Vietnam conflict and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star.

Bob worked as a teacher at Thornton Fractional High School and later became a Vice Principal. During his teaching career he loved being a coach; coaching football, bowling and badminton. He had a passion for antiques and collectibles and enjoyed refinishing furniture. Bob enjoyed going to Little Fish Lake in Michigan with his family. Above all else, Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and friends.

Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathryn Schwingendorf of Urbandale; twin sons, Robert (Elle Castro) Schwingendorf of Bay Area, CA; James (Tasha) Schwingendorf of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Emma Charlotte Castro Schwingendorf, Tealey, Brent, and Blake Schwingendorf; brother, Charles (Yoko) Schwingendorf of Anchorage, AK; brother-in-law, Terry (Jeana) Hindmarch and his daughter, Michelle; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Blanche Schwingendorf.
