Eli Moore was born in Wayne Co., Indiana, March 9th, 1832, departed this life March 23d, 1905, aged 73 years and 14 days.

He was married to Elizabeth A. Neal, Jan. 20th, 1853, and lived in Wayne county, Indiana until 1855 when they moved to Warren county, Iowa where they have lived ever since with the exception of three years that they lived in Madison county.

Eli Moore was a birthright member of the Friends Church, united with the Christian Church many years ago, when there was a good organization in the community in which he last lived and he with his wife were consistent members until his death. The wife and eight children are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and loving father. He was residing about three miles south of Carlisle at the time of his death. The funeral services were held at Middle River Friends Church Saturday at ten o’clock, March 25th, conducted by Rev. Nathaniel Corzatt. Two sons, L. O. Moore, of Medora and L. A. Moore, of Medford; Miss Elvira Moore, Mrs. D. H. Thomas, Mrs. Miller McVay, Mrs. Marrian Popejoy and Mrs. C. Prall, his daughters, were present at the funeral with a company of grandchildren. Mrs. Martha Berry, also a daughter living in Wamego, Kansas was not present. Pall bearers were his grandsons, Otis, Chas., and Roy Thomas, L. W. McVay, of St. Charles, L. Berry and B. B. Berry.

He was a man of few words unassuming in his manners, loved and respected by all who knew him. Though he resided in different parts of the county, he never owned a home of his own making the words of the poet applicable to his condition. “Not a foot of land do I possess, nor a cottage in the wilderness.” But by his upright and consistent life he has left a good legacy to his children and grandchildren which makes the scriptural declaration appropriate. “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Truly exemplifying the Christ life. His family and friends sustain a great loss in his death but their loss in his gain.
