Alanson Bowers, the fourth child of a family of seven children, was the son of Alanson and Ruth Eliza Bowers, was born March 27, 1848, in Weston, Platte county, Mo., and died at his home in Lincoln, Nebr., February 17, 1922, aged 73 years, 10 months and 20 days.

While yet a lad, his family moved to Iowa, and settled near St. Charles. On the 22nd of April, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Elenora Crooks, of Murray, Iowa. Soon after their marriage the young people moved to New Virginia, and a little later moved to St. Charles, where they resided until 1875, when they came to Murray, Iowa.

Two children were born to this union: Mrs. Annie E. Valentine, of Murray, Iowa, and Ettie who died at the age of two years. In 1885 the family moved to Lincoln, Nebr. On the 28th of April, 1888, Mr. Bowers was sadly bereaved by the death of his wife. Mr. Bowers was again united in marriage with Miss Cora Hermance of Murray, Iowa, on January 30, 1911.

For more than thirty years Mr. Bowers held a position with the State University of Nebraska, at Lincoln, which position he held at the time of his death.

While in Murray he had the honor of being the first mayor of the city. He was a charter member of Surprise Lodge No. 396 A.F. & A.M., Murray, Iowa. At the time of his death Mr. Bowers was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 19 of Lincoln, and of the Pentelpha Chapter No. 63, of Osceola, Iowa. He was proprietor of one of the first hotels in Murray, and also one of the early merchants in Murray.

Mr. Bowers is survived by two sisters and one brother—Mrs. Mary Thompson of New Virginia, Iowa; Mrs. Cordelia M. Roberts of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Mr. Samuel C. Bowers of Lincoln, Nebraska. He is also survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora Bowers, and his daughter, Mrs. Annie E. Valentine, of Murray, Iowa, and one granddaughter, Miss Beulah Valentine of Murray, Iowa.

Early in life Mr. Bowers confessed his faith in Christ and endeavored to show forth in his life the works and spirit of the Savior; always ready with a helping hand and a cheery word, and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He attended church at the St. Paul’s M.E. church of Lincoln whenever his work and health would permit. Always of jovial and happy disposition, fully trusting in the faith of his Savior, during the past few weeks, frequently singing the son, “Hover ‘Round Me Angel Band.” His end was sudden, quietly slipping away, to be at rest with his Master.
