Ruth Gale Myers-Sorter

Ruth Gale Myers-Sorter died unexpectedly and peacefully at her home in Truro, Iowa on January 6, 2018 at the age of 63.

Ruth was born on December 6, 1954 in Des Moines, Iowa to James R. Myers and Violet L. Swisher. Ruth graduated from Interstate 35 Community School in 1973. Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Timothy D. Nelson, on November 24, 1973. During this union they had two daughters, Dawn Marie and Amy Lynn. Her children remember her as a kind, generous and loving mother who had a passion for training horses and trail riding. Ruth was a true horsewoman and made sure not only her daughters would experience the joy of horses, but her grandchildren as well. Ruth loved to sew, play Scrabble, an artist and had the singing voice of an angel. Ruth loved to read the word of God and shared her love of Christ with her children and grandchildren. She was not only a mother to her children, but was most importantly, a friend and confidant. She always encouraged and supported them with their families and careers.

Ruth and Tim built Nelson Car & Truck Center from the ground up beginning on their property off the Truro pavement in the late 1970’s and eventually moved the business to Osceola, Iowa in early 1980’s. They were entrepreneurs and had many business ventures; owned a towing business, rental properties, car wash and C&S gas station. Ruth was also a Certified Nursing Assistant and made it her life’s work to care for others. Ruth cared for her mother for five years until Violet’s passing, allowing her to remain in her home as she wished.

Ruth was known to be a lover of animals and loved a project to care for. She was always willing to help the injured or needy. She would give anyone the clothes off her back without hesitation or concern for herself. Ruth was always willing to take in orphaned animals, especially in her younger years. There wasn’t an animal she wouldn’t help, including a litter of skunks that lost their mother. She viewed them all as equal the same way she regarded and treated everyone she met.

Preceding her in death were her parents; sister Sandy Miller and various aunts and uncles.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Sorter of Truro, Iowa; daughters, Dawn and husband Mark Woods of Osceola, Iowa, Amy and husband Greg Bassett of Waukee, Iowa; sibling, Roger Myers and wife Rhonda of Truro, Iowa; Four grandchildren, Severina Bassett, Ian Bassett, Timothy Woods and Kobe Woods; one great grandson, Jonathan Cox; nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for a future date and time. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ruth's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Dawn Woods who will then donate to the Clarke County Animal Shelter and the New Virginia Saddle Club. Dawn and Amy would like to thank specifically; Tammy Kivell, Taylor Kivell, Mary Blackford, Rita Eckhardt, Trevor Moore and family for all your help during this trying time. We would also like to thank all Mother’s friends that have been there for her throughout the years, the list is too long to name everyone. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
