Funeral services were held Sunday in the Church of Christ in Murray for Joseph L. Marler, who passed away at his home last Friday. Rev. Everett Epperson was the officiating clergyman, and interment was in the Murray cemetery under direction of Watts Funeral Home.

A male quartet, Everett Ogden, A. R. Miller, Gaylord Dick and Dr. F. W. Taylor sang “Going Down the Valley,” “Death is Only a Dream” and “Abide With Me.” Pallbearers were Roy Gould, Don Kelso, Harold Stephenson, Paul Diehl, Artie Bales and Clarence Stephenson.

Joseph L. Marler passed away at the farm home eight miles northeast of Murray, Iowa, February 5, 1943, at the advanced aged of 78 years, 9 months and 10 days. His death was wholly unexpected, as he retired as usual and fell asleep never to waken.

He had not been in good health for some time, but was still able to be around and enjoy life.

He was one of a family of seven children born to Joseph A. and Mary E. Marler, early pioneers of Madison county, Iowa.

The deceased was united in marriage with Jessie O. Stephenson in Clarke County, Iowa, September 8, 1891 and has always resided in this vicinity; about 19 years were spent in Murray, and the remainder of the time on farms. To this union were born two children, Frances Dentler, now teaching school at Grand River, Iowa and Albert S. Marler in the farm home. There are also two grandsons, James and Robert Dentler, who were the joy and pride of their grandfather.

One brother, C. A. Marler, of Osceola, is the last surviving member of this pioneer family.

J. L. Marler was a good worker, an honest upright citizen, one whose word was as good as a bond, always interested in matters of the day, and kept abreast of the times by reading, and conversation. Many years ago he united with the Christian church of Murray, and his name is engraved on the cornerstone of the present building, he being an officer and on the building committee when it was erected.
