Mrs. Hattie Edwards was born at Plattsmouth, Mo., May 22, 1840, and died in Des Moines, September 20, 1911, her age being seventy-one years, four months. The first of her life was spent in slavery and at the close of the war of 1861-65 she came with a family to Iowa, locating at Winterset, Madison county. Here she made the acquaintance of Tobey Edwards and they were united in marriage at Adel, Dallas county, August 9, 1869.

After a pleasant wedded life of forty-two years, the tie is broken by the intruder, death, and she is sweetly resting. She leaves her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Della Bryant, of Des Moines and her husband, one son, Elmer Edwards, of Des Moines and his wife, with five grandchildren and a large circle of ardent and devoted friends who mourn her absence.

The deceased was converted and united with the M.E. church, but after her marriage and location at Winterset, she became a member of the Winterset Baptist church with her husband. Later, coming to Osceola with the family, she became a worthy member of the Osceola Baptist church remaining faithful, true and loyal till about seven years ago the family removed to Des Moines where she became a member of the Corinthian Baptist Church (colored). Here she spent the rest of her life happy in the serve of God and the kind care and attention of her family until called to rest in the House not made with hands.

The remains were brought to Osceola and funeral services were held in the Baptist church, services being conducted by the Rev. T. Edwards of Osceola, assisted by Rev. Griffith of Des Moines. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery.
