Dr. D. M. Palmer Dies

Dr. Dana M. Palmer, 58, a former resident of Winterset, died at 12 o’clock Saturday night, July 29, at his home in Ottawa, Illinois, from the effects of a heart attack. He had been seriously ill for less than a day.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Baptist church and burial was in the Summit View cemetery. The Humboldt lodge of Masons of Ottawa had charge of the services at the grave.

Dr. Palmer was born in Monson, Maine, and came to Winterset in 1894, or when he was 19 years of age. He farmed for three years, near here and then lived two years in Des Moines. On December 9, 1897, he was married to Miss Belle Gentry. In 1900 with his father, Benjamin Palmer and other relatives, he made an expedition to the Blind Man river valley in Alberta, Canada, and it was stated that they were the first white men to enter the valley. After four years there, Mr. Palmer returned to Chicago and attended the Chicago Veterinary college. He was graduated with honors in 1909, and went to Ottawa, where he has since resided.

Dr. Palmer was a member of the Ottawa City council and for the past four years, was a field agent of the division of animal husbandry of the state department of agriculture.

Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, Merrill Palmer of St. Louis, three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Henrich, Miss Edith Palmer and Miss Mary R. Palmer of Ottawa and a grandson, Donald Morrill Palmer of St. Louis, two brothers Charles B. Palmer of Audubon and Albion C. Palmer of Spokane, Washington, and a sister, Mrs. John A. Koaarski of Three Lakes, Wisconsin.

Those from here attending the funeral services were Miss Sylvia Gentry, Mac Gentry and Miss Hazel Husted. John Gentry of Valley Junction and Mrs. A. P. Stickler of Altoona also attended.
