Joan Walsh, West Des Moines

Joan Walsh, 77, died Friday, December 15th, 2017 at Mercy Hospice after a brief and aggressive battle with cancer. Joni was born in Chicago to John Daly and Mary (Baldwin) Daly. After their move to Des Moines, she attended All Saints Elementary School, St Joseph's Academy (Class of 1958) and Clarke College, where she studied Art History. She married Alan Walsh in 1965 and they worked together building his business and raising five children before his prolonged illness and death in 1984.

Her passion for arts never ceased and she was known for her ability to crochet, quilt, draw, paint and sew. St Patrick's Day was a family holiday where she adorned her family in shamrock gear from heads to toes. She was incredibly proud of her Irish ancestry. She loved cooking, laughter, rides in the country, lunches in Winterset, and her family, especially time with her grandchildren. Her memory for trivia was impeccable and she was the first call when someone had a question about a historical event, movie name, or recipe ingredient.

She is survived by her children, Anne Jarnagin (Greg), Amy MacKrell (Scott), Michael, Jenny Marrs (AJ), and Matt (Sara); her eleven grandchildren: Hallie, Riley, Daly, Tate, Nick, Bianca, Payton, Samantha, Sawyer, Aidan, and Rose; her sisters Julianne Daly (Terry Brown), Patty Haimerl (Hans), and Donna Stence (Dick); her brother Jack Daly; her cousin John Francis (Linda); and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Terri Peterson, and niece Nicole Haimerl-Tschampel.

Memorial Mass will be on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, IA. A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery.

The family would like to thank nurses Deb and Eileen at Mercy Medical Center for their loving care. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice or Mercy Auxiliary.
