Page 8, Column 4William Washington Butler, son of W. H. H. and Julia Ann Butler, was born in Gallia county, Ohio, December 19, 1836. When but a boy his father moved with the family to Fulton county, Ill., where he grew to manhood.
In September, 1858, he was united in marriage to Sarah Alleen Conway, of Warren county, Ill. To this union were born five children, Ida, Giles, Gilbert, Harry and Phoebe.
In 1863 he moved to Madison county, Iowa and settled on a farm, remaining there until 1865, when his wife and three children, Ida, Giles and Phoebe, were called to their final rest. The other two boys preceded their father to the better land, Harry dying in 1890 and Gilbert in 1914.
He again returned to Illinois and in 1887 was married to Sarah Catherine White. They came to Warren county, Iowa, settling on a farm near Medford. Four children were born to them—Cora, Charles Asa, Adda May and Walter Scott. Only one of the children, Charles Asa, survives him; Cora dying in infancy, Walter Scott in 1892, and Adda May Taylor in 1902.
Both he and his wife were stricken with their last illness on Sunday, January 25, and she preceded him into the kingdom just one week. He died Thursday, February 5th, 1920, aged eighty-three years, one month and eighteen days.
He leaves to mourn his departure one brother, Henry Butler, of Illinois, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Manda Butler, of Indianola; one son-in-law, Cort Taylor, of South Dakota; twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Conway, of Indianola, and Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson of California, and one brother Henry Butler, of Illinois.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, doing what he could in his quiet way to bring happiness to those about him. He will be greatly missed by all, and especially by his grandchildren.
