Thomas Corwin Burkhead was born Aug. 24, 1848, in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. His parental family remained here until the fall of 1864 when they emigrated to Warren county, Iowa, settling in Jefferson township. He remained at home until his marriage to Miss Caroline Lotz, of Madison county, March, 1875. To this union were born seven children, five boys and two girls. The two girls and one boy dying in infancy.

His wife died Aug. 15, 1903, in Lucas county, Iowa, but was buried in the Linn Grove cemetery near his old home, leaving a husband and four sons to mourn her loss.

He was converted during the winter of 1865 under the pastorate of Bro. Murphy and united with the Linn Grove M.E. church. He remained a consistent member of the church of his choice for forty-three years, changing localities as a residence required. He was a faithful member to his church requirements from the day of his conversion to the day of his death which occurred June 14, 1908, aged fifty-nine years, nine months and twenty days.

He was of a modest, agreeable disposition, a friend to everyone, perfectly honest, never laid a straw in any person’s way as far as the writer knows and he has known him from his coming here until his death. He was the same Thomas Burkhead every day. His sufferings for some time before his departure were at times very intense, yet he bore them with great patience, trusting to the promises of his Lord and Savior for the comforts to come.

His burial was attended by a large concourse of relatives and neighbors conducted by Revs. Harned and Van Dyke.
