Gus Holderbaum, a highly respected citizen, friend and neighbor of the Penn township community, passed away early Monday morning, having been a patient sufferer many months.

Jacob Augustus Holderbaum, son of Henry D. and Christina Holderbaum, was born on a farm, now occupied by Chas. Scar, June 20, 1877, and passed away at the old homestead three and one-half miles south of Dexter, Sept. 5, 1937.

He was the youngest child in a family of twelve children, nine of them and his father and mother passed before him to their reward. Almost all of his life was spent in Penn township. He spent two years in Montana. He was united in marriage with Alice M. May in Stuart, Iowa, October 17, 1906. To this union were born two daughters, Elaine Fink, of Stuart, Iowa, and Doris Bennett, of Dexter.

When a young man he united with the Presbyterian church and later united with the Penn Center M.E. church where he was active in Christian service for a number of years. He taught several classes in Sunday school and served as a member of the official board. At the time of his decease he was a member of the board of trustees. He loved the church and enjoyed the worship service as long as his health permitted him to attend. When on his sick bed he enjoyed the singing of hymns in his home and his faith in a great and good God did not waver. He was a fine neighbor and a good citizen. He was kind and affectionate with his dear ones and believed that home was a haven for souls who really lived. He was a patient sufferer and never complained. He will always be remembered by his hearty laughter and optimistic spirit and his social and friendly greeting with all whom he came in contact.

Besides his sorrowing companion and two daughters, he leaves three granddaughters, Marilyn and Maxine Fink and Lilah Bennett; and two sisters, Carolina Amanda Thrailkill and Mrs. Cora Thornton, with many other relatives and friends.

Although deprived of a mother’s care when only 12 years old, he gave her much credit for her Christian devotion in guiding his young life in that straight and narrow way which leads from earth to heaven. He was very considerate of the aged grandmother and gave her the same attention he would his mother and other members in his own family.

A good man has gone from this community and he will be greatly missed.

Funeral services at Penn Center M.E. church Tuesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. H. Freedline, assisted by Rev. Wm. Youtsler. Interment in Dexter cemetery.
