Edith F. Delaplain, 99, of West Bridge Care Center in Winterset, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Jefferson Center United Methodist Church with Rev. Kathy Sides officiating. Burial was in the Jefferson Cemetery at Menlo.

Janna Nelson played “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “In The Garden.”

Bearers were Gary Anderson, Alan Anderson, Andy Fredericksen, Denny Estes, Jeanie Estes, and Greg Ruppert.

Edith Frances Bates was born on May 4, 1906 in New Plymouth, Idaho, to Frank and Sophronia (Eivins) Bates.

Edith moved with her family to Minnesota in 1913 and then to Madison County in 1914. She graduated from Macksburg High School in 1925 and took teacher’s training after that.

On Oct. 3, 1928 she married Clayton F. Delaplain and they had two chosen daughters, Janet and Donna. The family moved to Greene County in the 1930’s and began farming there. They later farmed in Guthrie and Adair counties for many years. Clayton and Edith retired to Menlo in 1966.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1979, a daughter, Janet Kuster; five brothers, Ole, Vern, Samuel, Lloyd, and Frank Bates; one sister, Goldie Hatfield; and an infant son, Jerold.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna and Gary Anderson of Des Moines, six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Ruppert Funeral Home of Stuart was in charge of the arrangements.
