George Francis Piper, son of Isaac and Anna Piper, was born April 6, 1872, in Holmes County, Ohio. He was one of eight children, having one brother and six sisters. At the age of two he moved with his parents to a farm five miles south of Dexter, in Madison County, and from that early age his residence has been in this community. At the time of his death he had lived forty-two years on the farm north of Dexter.

On February 7, 1900, he was united in marriage to Amelia Pohle at her home in Dexter. To this union were born four daughters: Martha (Mrs. L. V. Dugan of Minburn, Iowa), Mildred (St. Paul, Minn.), Roma (deceased, and Ardus (Mrs. Howard Walker of Dexter). It was a very happy occasion when this couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two years ago.

During the past two years, Mr. Piper’s health has been failing, and after an illness of three and a half months, he passed away at the Dexter Clinic at the age of 79 years, two months and two days. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and one grandchild, Roma Louise Walker. There are also three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hubbell, San Pedro, Calif., Mrs. Mary Lampert, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Sopha Francis, Carstairs, Alberta, Canada.

He was a devoted father, deeply interested in his home and the welfare of his family. Reading was one of his leisure time activities in which he found much pleasure. That the beauties of nature meant a great deal to him was manifested by hi remarkable rose garden.

On January 13, 1895, he was received into the membership of the First Presbyterian church of Dexter and faithfully attended the services until his recent illness prevented him. On January 10, 1910, he was elected a Deacon by the congregation and served in that capacity for six years. On April 4, 1916, he was elected by the congregation to the office of Ruling Elder. Following his ordination, he continued faithfully in that office until the time of his death, at which time he was the Senior Elder of the church.

He will be greatly missed by his family, church, neighbors, and the community.
