Lester Elmer Compton, the son of Elmer and Elma Mendenhall Compton, was born June 22, 1902 near Dexter, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday morning, August 22, 1979 at Madison County Hospital in Winterset, Iowa at the age of 77.

Lester graduated from Dexter High School in 1921. He had planned to attend Iowa State University but after being stricken with polio was able to attend for only a short time.

On October 30, 1926 Lester was united in marriage to Dortha Barr at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They spent their life together farming, first in Guthrie County and later southeast of Stuart. In 1965 Lester’s physical condition required that he retire from farming. They continued to live on the farm until 1974 when they moved to Redfield.

Lester was a birthright member of Bear Creek Friends Church. In later years he became a member of the Dexter United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his loving wife Dortha, one brother Ivan of Earlham; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Fritz of Sanford, North Carolina and Mrs. Jesse Thomsen of Omaha, Nebraska, and 11 nieces and nephews.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services were conducted August 24, 1979 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dexter, Iowa with the Rev Jerry Evelsizer officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Nadine Shepherd, organist, and Jon Shepherd, soloist. Cast bearers were Bruce Atherton, Norman Bennett, John Hadley, Warren Neal, Jack Wambold and Robert Wilson. Interment was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa. Professional services by McKee Funeral Homes, Dexter, Iowa.
