James Elliott Armstrong, son of John and Hannah Armstrong was born near Earlham in Madison county on January 17, 1891 and passed away at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines on May 25, 1960 at the age of 69 years, 4 months and 8 days.

Elliott was the 8th child in a family of 13 children, all but one of whom have preceded him in death.

The first part of his life was lived on farms in Madison and Adair counties. He came to Stuart in 1913 where he cared for his father and mother until their deaths.

In August 1919, he was united in marriage to Laura Irey of Muscatine. They established their home in Stuart where they have resided since that time.

Elliott worked at the plumbers trade for many years. He did tiling and worked on the railroad, and was also a barber.

He served overseas with the armed forces in World War I. He has belonged to both the V. F. W. and the American Legion. He was baptized and united with the Stuart Christian church on January 17, 1912 on his 21st birthday.

He is survived by his wife Laura of Stuart, one sister Edna Herrick of Menlo, one step-son, Donald Irey and his wife and 3 children of Clarence, Iowa. Also many nieces and nephews and a number of cousins of whom we wish to mention particularly the Hill family, Dan, Susie and Sadie of Stuart who have been as close to the family as brother and sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Bufkin Funeral Home with Rev Ernest A. Smith officiating. Music was presented by Robin Lawson, organist, Mrs. Everett Roe and Mrs. Art Hanner. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Irene Hanson and Mrs. Mabel James. Casketbearers were Gerald Maline, John Donnelly, Frank Sherman, Leo Farrell, Ray Anderson and Elmer Wilson. Interment was in South Oak Grove cemetery.
