Rev. A.R. Weed died at 97

ORIENT—Rev. A. R. Weed, 97, of Orient, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at the Good Samaritan Center at Fontanelle, where he had made his home for the past several years. He had lived at Orient since 1958 until moving to the center at Fontanelle.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bickford-Murray funeral home at Greenfield. Rev. Russell Vanderhoef, pastor of the United Methodist church at Pomeroy, will officiate. Burial will be in the King cemetery, southeast of Winterset.

He was born Nov. 15, 1877, and said several years ago that his boyhood years were spent in the midwest—ranging from eastern Iowa through Nebraska and as far west as Grand Junction, Colo.

He was married at Peru, Nov. 16, 1898, to Flora Jane Little. She died in December, 1969, about a month after they had observed their 71st wedding anniversary.

Rev. Weed is survived by two sons, Lonnie Weed of Orient and Lyle Weed of Rochester, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; and a number of great great grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death.

Rev. Weed started the practice of preaching at the Elm Grove and Zion churches in Madison county, where he farmed for 17 years. In 1918 he became pastor of the Hebron, Wesley Chapel and Webster churches in Adair and Madison counties. Later charges he served were the Carl-Mount Etna charge in Adams county, the Tingley-Wishard Chapel-Ellston charge in Ringgold county, and Lamoni-Davis City charge in Decatur county.

Rev. and Mrs. Weed moved to Orient in 1958 and he later served as pastor of the Grove Center and Clara Chapel churches in Adair county. He led an interdenominational weekly Bible study class in Orient for many years.

LONNIE WEED’S GRANDFATHER, RETIRED PASTOR, DIES

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon Jan. 12, at the Bickford-Murray Funeral Home in Greenfield for Rev. Arthur R. Weed, 97, of Orient, grandfather of Lonnie Weed of Anita.

Rev. Weed passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 9, at the good Samaritan Center at Fontanelle, where he had made his home for the past three years. He had lived in Orient since 1958, until moving to the GSC at Fontanelle.

Rev. Weed was born at Irwin, Ia., to Charles Nephy and Susan Dudley Weed, on Nov. 15, 1877. His boyhood years were spent in the “midwest,” ranging from eastern Iowa through Nebraska and as far west as Flora Junction, Colo. He was united in marriage to Flora Jane Little on Nov. 16, 1898 at Peru, Ia. She passed away December 1969, about a month after they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

He is survived by two sons, Lonnie of Orient and Dr. Lyle of Rochester, Minn.; also 21 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, and 45 great-great grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death.

He started the practice of preaching at the Elm Grove and Zion Churches in Madison county, where he farmed 17 years. In 1918, he became pastor of the Hebron, Wesley Chapel and Webster churches in Adair county, and West Star and Worthing in Madison County. Later he served charges at Carl, Mount Etna in Adams County, the Tingley-Wishard Chapel and Ellston church in Ringgold county, and the Lamoni-Davis City church in Decatur county.

Rev. Weed and his wife moved to Orient in 1958, and he later served as pastor of the Grove Center and Clara Chapel churches in Adair County. He led an inter-denominational weekly Bible study class in Orient for many years.

Funeral rites were conducted by Rev. Frank Nichols of Creston, Creston District Superintendent, in the absence of Rev. Russell Vanderhoef of Pomeroy, who was snowbound and unable to get to Greenfield.

Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Donald Hogan, organist, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bickford sang “Beautiful Beckoning Hands” and “Shall We Meet Beyond the River?”

Casket bearers were Arthur Husted, Paul Husted, Robert Husted, Dale Weed, Marvin J. Weed, and Lonnie J. Weed. Burial was in the King Cemetery in Madison county, southeast of Winterset.
