Page 1, Column 2Gen. A. J. Baker Dies in Centerville
Gen. A. J. Baker, one of the first citizens of Madison county and one of Winterset’s first attorneys, died at his home in Centerville Sunday. Gen. Baker came with his parents to Madison county in 1850. He was a brother of Dan Baker, who died years ago in Walnut township, and of Mrs. A. Lake. He was an uncle of Mrs. A. W. Wilkinson and of Mrs. Wood Wilson and the Baker boys of Walnut township. He was a brother-in-law of Dr. Bevington.
Gen. Baker came to Winterset and opened a law office with H. J. B. Cummings and afterward was a partner of Israel Culbertson. He married Sophia Parker, the daughter of a well known Methodist preacher, in 1858. He was attorney general of Missouri after the war and was afterward attorney general of Iowa during the prohibition period. Gen. Baker was a frequent visitor to Winterset. He always declared that the happiest days of his life were passed in Madison county and that his friends here were his best. He is survived by his wife and eight children.

________________________Coordinator's note: The term "General" apparently refers to his service as Attorney General. He reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the 17th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War.
