Page 5, Columns 6 & 7R. O. Skellenger, son of Chancy and Eliza Skellenger was born in Livingston County, New York, Feb. 18, 1866, and passed away Jan. 2, 1960 at the Dexter hospital, Dexter, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 14 days.
He was one of a family of six children, all of whom have preceded him in death.
When he was seven years of age, the family came to Madison county, Iowa from the east in a covered wagon, later moving to Cass county where he received his education.
He was united in marriage Feb. 18, 1890 to Kate E. McCaulley of Adair county. To this union were born seven children. Those who remain to mourn his passing are, Floyd Skellenger and Clara Draman of Stuart, Clarence Skellenger, George Skellenger and Margaret Smith of Menlo and Laura Garnett of Greenfield.
His wife and a daughter, Jessie Powell preceded him in death.
Mr. Skellenger lived on farms in Adair and Guthrie counties most of his life, except for a few years when he retired from the farm and moved to Stuart, later returning to a farm in Adair county, he engaged in active farming until the death of his wife in 1946. His grandson, Conrad Smith born 7 months before Mrs. Skellenger’s passing, became a focal point of interest and gracious consolation during the following years of adjustment.
Then wanting to be near his children, he moved to a little home close to his daughter Margaret, spending some of the winters living with his daughter, Clara.
In 1958, he moved to Greenfield, where he and his daughter, Laura made their home until his final illness.
He was a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, making several trips to the west coast.
Being a devoted father, he was happiest among his children.
Besides his children, he is survived by his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, 31 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. His family were at his bedside constantly during his last illness.
Mr. Skellenger was at one time a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Casey. On confession of faith he was baptized and received as a member of the Methodist church with his daughter, Laura Garnett in a service held September 30, 1959 at the Adair County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Jan. 5 from the Stuart Methodist church with Rev. Hugh Williams and Rev. Donald Arthur officiating. Music was presented by Robin and Robert Lawson.
