Thursday morning, April 25, Nathan Dix Coffin passed to the “Great Beyond” full of years and good work. He was taken sick with pneumonia the middle of February and has since made a persistent and brave fight for life and it was hoped for many days that a good constitution, careful nursing and the best medical attention had won the battle, but a change came. On Sunday morning he was taken with heart failure and gradually failed until Thursday morning when he passed peacefully away surrounded by his family so far as they could be summoned to his bedside.

Nathan Dix Coffin was born in Wayne county, Indiana, May 1, 1833. In 1836 with his family he moved to Madison county, Ind., where he lived for twenty years. His next move was to Jefferson county, Iowa, in 1856, coming as most pioneers did by ox team. In 1878 he moved to Dallas county and from there to Earlham. After a years’ residence in Earlham, he moved to Lincoln township, Adair county, and spent a year and then moved to Stuart, in 1880, where he has since resided.

August 19, 1858, he was united in marriage to Lydia Ann Shockley. To them were born twelve children, six of whom with the wife and mother survive him.

He was a birthright member of the Friends church and he remained faithful to the church and to its teachings to the last. He was a conscientious man, upright in all his dealings, and never wronged any man. He was a good neighbor and a kind husband and father and died loved and respected by all.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Friends church conducted by Rev. Charles E. White, of Earlham. It was fitting that his remains should find their last abiding place before being consigned to the grave, in the church for which he had done so much, and that his associates in church work, who knew him best and loved him most, should tenderly lay his body in the grave.
