Page 4, Column 5Mildred D. Piper, daughter of George F. and Amelia B. Piper, was born August 29, 1902 in Madison County, Iowa. She passed away at the Lutheran Home at Perry, Iowa on September 5, 1982.
She was graduated from Dexter High School and the University of Iowa. She received her Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota.
Miss Piper taught school in Delmar and Iowa City, Iowa and in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For the next 20 years she taught at The Summit School, a private school for girls in St. Paul, Minnesota. Upon the death of her father, she returned to Dexter and taught in the Dexfield schools until her retirement.
Mildred was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dexter where she served as church school teacher, church school superintendent and church treasurer. She served as president of the Women’s Association and as an Elder of the church.
Mildred traveled in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and South America. She was especially interested in children’s literature, human relations and civil rights.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Roma. Survivors include her two sisters, Martha E. Dugan and her husband, Lester, of Minburn, Iowa and Ardus L. Walker and her husband, Howard, of Dexter, one niece, Roma Walker Maycock and her husband, Paul of Alexandria, Virginia, also five great nieces and nephews, Robin Maycock Little and her husband, David, of Blacksburg, Virginia, Joel Maycock of Knoxville, Tennessee, Andrea Maycock of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Jennifer and Seth Maycock of Alexandria, Virginia.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter, Iowa on September 8, 1982 with the Rev. Gladys Priest officiating. Soloists were Kenneth and Jean Shepherd and Nadine Shepherd was organist. Casket bearers were Bruce Bailey, Richard Wells, Vince Wells, Gaylord Herring, Charles Weesner and Jim McMenamin. Interment was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa.
