Hiland Patterson Bunce, son of William Lossen and Minnie May Bunce, was born in Madison county, Iowa October 29th, 1896 and passed away at the University Hospital, Iowa City, July 24, 1968 at the age of 71 years, 8 months, 25 days.

He came with his parents to Adair county as a small child. He received his education in the rural schools of Adair County.

He was married to Ethel Fleming of rural Stuart, Iowa on October 5, 1921. After four months spent in Madison County they moved to Arbor Hill, Adair County where they operated a hardware store, a machine shop, a service station, and a trucking line from which he received much enjoyment from serving the various needs of his community. He sold his business interests there and moved to Greenfield in November 1967. In 1956 he suffered a heart attack from which he recovered sufficiently to continue his business. About two and a half years ago his health began to fail.

He is survived by his wife Ethel, a sister-in-law Gladys Bunce, of Fontanelle, a brother-in-law, Elmer Bares of Arkansas City, Kansas and also a brother-in-law Albert Fleming and wife Golda of Menlo; a number of nieces and nephews and a great host of friends. Hiland was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one dying in infancy, and one brother.

He was a great lover of music and played for the enjoyment of many folk in Adair and Madison counties. He also was a great lover of people and was very easy to get along with as attested by those who worked for him for many years.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 27 from the Greenfield Methodist Church with rev. Evan Routh officiating. Music was provided by Robert Lawson, vocalist, and Mrs. Donald Hogan, organist. Mr. and Mrs. Garold Bochart and Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Williams assisted with the floral tributes. Pallbearers were Leo Lane, Roy Johnson, Alfred Peckham, Don Draman, Harold Beaman and Delbert Belgard. Honorary bearers were R. C. Lydon, Sam Nelson, Carl Tyson and Floyd Hoadley. Interment was in the Greenfield Cemetery.
