Samuel Martin, son of John and Margaret Anderson Martin, was born in Dumfries, Scotland, May 31, 1842. He came to America with his parents at the age of seven years and landed in Peoria, Illinois after a “trip” by water lasting three months, coming by the way of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers.

Five years later the family removed to La Prairie township, Marshall county, Illinois, where on February 7, 1865 Mr. Martin was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Weede, who preceded him, dying six years ago.

They settled on a farm in La Prairie and moved to Warren County, Iowa, in 1872, where he lived until the time of his death.

To Mr. and Mrs. Martin seven children were born: Dr. J. S. Martin, Mt. Ayr, Indiana; Mrs. Lillie Miles, Promise City, Iowa; Samuel A. Martin, Draper, South Dakota; N. Weede Martin, Indianola, Iowa; Mrs. Bessie Burns, Indianola, Iowa; Dr. Frank Martin, Roosevelt, Oklahoma; Mrs. Madge Wright, Benton, Iowa, who with one sister, Mrs. Mary G. Anderson, Roberts, Illinois, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild survive. Mrs. Martin passed away six years ago.

At an early age Mr. Martin united with the United Presbyterian church. For more than thirty years he served as Elder and Clerk of Session, which testifies to his strong faith in God, his devotion to the church and his interest in Christian work.

Mr. Martin passed away at his home in Indianola last Thursday, March 16, 1922, aged 79 years, 9 months and 16 days.

The funeral was held at the United Presbyterian church Sabbath afternoon at 2:00. In the absence of his pastor, Rev. H. B. McElree, who had been called to Texas by the illness of his brother, the service was conducted by Rev. Thomas McGregor, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the Indianola cemetery.
