Helen Delores Lorenzen

Helen Delores Lamm Lorenzen was the 4th child born to Floyd B. and Erma Hazel (Short) Lamm. Helen was born on February 24, 1934 near Truro in Madison County, Iowa. She passed from this life on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at her home in Winterset, Iowa.

Helen grew up living on the farm east of Truro. Helen graduated from Truro Consolidated School District in 1952. She attended Simpson College, graduating in 1956 with her teaching certificate. She was hired to teach 2nd grade at Alleman, Iowa for the next 2 years.

Helen was united in marriage to Billie Gene Lorenzen May 26, 1956 at Sioux Rapids, Iowa, settling in Truro, Iowa where Bill worked at Natural Gas Pipeline and Helen taught kindergarten at the Truro Consolidated School District.

In 1958, Bill was drafted to serve in the US Army. This took them to Fort Carson, Colorado for 6 months, then 18 months in Tacoma, Washington. Their daughter, Dione Renae was born at Madigan Army Hospital (Fort Lewis) in Pierce County, Washington, April 5, 1960.

Return to Iowa after Bill's discharge in July 1960, and Bill went back to work at NGPL and Helen taught 2nd grade at New Virginia 1961-1962 school year. Brett Eugene was born October 10, 1962 at Des Moines General Hospital. She went back to teach 3rd grade at Interstate 35, in 1963 (2 years in Kindergarten) retiring in 1996 after a total of 38 years in the class room.

Helen enjoyed life and touched many. She was active in her community and blessed with many life long friends. Always competitive, and in charge, she loved playing cards and games of any kind but especially loved winning. She put her heart and soul into everything she did and was always quick with a helping hand to those in need.

Preceding her in death was her beloved husband of 60 years, Bill, parents, sisters, Ethel Rosander & Virginia Beener, brother, Merrill Lamm, brother in laws, Melford Rosander and Louis Beener.

Survivors include daughter, Dione (Bill) Young of St. Charles, son, Brett (Kim) Lorenzen of Nixa, Missouri, grandson, Forrest (Betsey) Young of Adel, IA, Tucker of Polk City, IA, and Garrett Young (and fiance, Jamie Hagerman) of West Des Moines, IA, granddaughter, Haley Bridges of Springfield, MO, great granddaughter, Emma Kay Bridges of Springfield, MO as well as other family and many friends.

Family suggests in lieu of flowers that friends make a donation in Helen's name to the following,
HCI Hospice Care or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or
the Truro Public Library.

Helen Delores Lamm Lorenzen, 83, of Truro died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at her home in Winterset.
Memorial services were 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola with Bryan Arzani officiating. Visitation with family present was from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen's name to HCI Hospice Care, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Truro Public Library. Online condolences may be left at kalefuneralhome.com.

On May 26, 1956, Helen married Billie Gene Lorenzen at Sioux Rapids, settling in Truro. Helen taught kindergarten at Truro Consolidated School District. In 1958, Bill was drafted to serve in the US Army. This took them to Fort Carson, Colorado, for six months, then 18 months in Tacoma, Washington. They returned to Iowa after Bill's discharge in July 1960, and Helen taught second grade at New Virginia for the 1961-62 school year. She then taught third grade at Interstate 35 in 1963, retiring in 1996 after a total of 38 years.

Helen is survived by her daughter Dione (Bill) Young of St. Charles; son Brett (Kim) Lorenzen of Nixa, Missouri; grandsons, Forrest (Betsey) Young of Adel, Tucker Young of Polk City and Garrett Young (fiance Jamie Hagerman) of West Des Moines; granddaughter Haley Bridges of Springfield, Missouri; great-granddaughter Emma Kay Bridges of Springfield, Missouri; as well as other family and many friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bill; parents; sisters, Ethel Rosander and Virginia Beener; brother Merrill Lamm and brothers-in-law, Melford Rosander and Louis Beener.
