Ed Jeffs of Kasson Found in Cornfield by His Wife With Bullet in His Brain
Alarmed at the absence of her husband, Mrs. Ed Jeffs, living near the old postoffice of Kasson, in Monroe township, went in search of him. She found him lying on the ground almost dead with a .38 revolver clutched in his hand. He died before the physician could reach him.
The Jeffs family live in the house just north of the Kasson church and Thursday, a little after noon, Mr. Jeffs took a couple of grain sacks saying that he was going to gather some beans. After he had been gone for some time, his wife, evidently mistrusted something and went to look for him. She found him about a hundred yards from the house in the corn field where he had shot himself, nearly dead. Help was summoned and word sent to town for a doctor, but life was extinct before help arrived.
It was a clear case of suicide, he having shot himself in the right temple with a .38 caliber revolver, the bullet ranging upwards and breaking the skull above the temple on the left side. When found, he still had the revolver in his hand, his front finger still being in the trigger guard.
Mr. Jeffs was a man about 45 or 50 years old, well respected by those who know him. He leaves a wife and a number of dependent children in very poor circumstances. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon.
