Janice Berlin passed away on September 12, 2017 at the age of 94 at Deerfield Retirement Community in Urbandale. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, September 15th at McLaren's Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors from 1 pm until the service begins with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Janice Gail Smith was born June 10, 1923 in Lamont, Iowa. She was the only child of Frederick Raymond Smith and Helen Lucille (Ward) Smith. Janice graduated from Perry High School in 1941. Janice married Frank Walton Berlin of Woodward, Iowa on June 20, 1942 in Merced, CA. After Frank served in WWII, they made their home in Winterset, IA, Bangor, ME, Alexandria, LA, Woodward, IA and finally settling in West Des Moines, IA in 1956. Frank passed away in 1994 and Janice continued to live in West Des Moines until 2008 when she moved to Deerfield.

Janice leaves her family and friends with many wonderful memories; especially the summers spent at the family cabin on Woman Lake in Minnesota and the family's memorable trip to the 1982 Rose Bowl game. Her life was centered around her family, which was a constant source of joy. Janice was a long time member of the United Methodist Church. Frank and Janice were loyal Iowa Hawkeye fans. She was proud to be the great-great-great-great granddaughter of the American patriot, Patrick Henry.

Those left to cherish Janice's memory include her daughter, Linda (Jerry) Coy of Johnston; son, Frank (Jan) Berlin of West Des Moines; son, Bruce (Carla) Berlin of Urbandale; grandchildren, Brad (Kayla) Coy, Kerri (Tim) Alvarez, Brooke (Travis) Acheson, Brette (Fred) Scott, Ed Berlin, Tom (Lindsay) Berlin; great-grandchildren, Bryce and Bailey Coy, Alec Alvarez, Isabelle, Emma and Gretta Acheson, Evan and Frankie Scott.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Deerfield for their loving care and concern for Janice over the last nine years.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners Hospital for Children or Puppy Jake Foundation in memory of Janice or the charity of your choice.
