Mildred "Millie" Miller, West Des Moines

Millie Miller, 98, passed away September 16, 2017 in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at McLaren's.

Millie was born in Winterset on September 12, 1919 and grew up during the Great Depression. She never forgot those difficult times. Millie graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and became a dental hygienist.

While removing wisdom teeth from a young man, a romance bloomed. John and Millie went on to raise their three children on a farm in what is now Clive. The red brick barn on University was a landmark and everyone enjoyed seeing the cattle and sheep along the road.

Millie was active in the West Des Moines Women's Club and West Des Moines United Methodist Church. She was well known for her culinary skills and converted many people to roast lamb enthusiasts. It would be difficult to name a favorite recipe. She was also in charge of the "Make It With Wool" contest at the Iowa State Fair for many years.

Our thanks to Deerfield for the years that John and Millie lived there. After John's passing, Millie moved to Edgewater and greatly enjoyed the compassionate care she received.

Millie is survived by her daughter Connie Miller and her children, Eric Parcher, Laura (John) Hardy, and Sarah (Dave) Lyman; daughter, Kaye (Dale) Rieck and their children, Christina (Kane) Loukas and David (Andrea) Rieck; and son, Jim (Deborah) Miller and their children, Lauren (Jeff) Letizia and Drew Miller; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association of Iowa.
