James Milton Hickman, son of Hiram and Mary Pearson Hickman, was born Nov. 5, 1874 in Madison county near Macksburg, Iowa, and passed away at Excelsior Springs, Mo., Feb. 16, 1955, at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 11 days.
He attended Madison county public school near Macksburg.
In 1898 James went to Gunnison, Colorado, where he worked on a cattle ranch, and later settled on a homestead. He spent about 20 years on a farm near Gunnison, Colorado.
He married Winnifred Wilson in 1919 at Montrose, Colo. She preceded him in death in November of 1952.
James joined the IOOF lodge in Gunnison and later transferred to Murray.
His hobby was horses. He helped to train saddle horses. He worked for the Long View Farm near Kansas City, Mo., for three years. Later he came to Des Moines and cared for the horses at the Riding Academy.
James is survived by two sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Tom Hindes, and Ed Hickman of Murray, Howard Hickman of Patterson, Frank Hickman of Oskaloosa, Ia.; J. G. Adams of Columbia, Mo., and Joh Hickman of Osceola. One sister, Mrs. W. H. Ries, and a brother, Hirom E. Hickman, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Watts funeral home in Murray, February 18, 1955, with Rev. Lacey Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Murray cemetery. Music was furnished by True Woods, Clarence Arnold, Charles Arnold and Clarence Wetzel, with Mrs. Fred Martin, accompanist. Pall bearers were W. A. Agans, Orlo Fenn, A. H. Johnson, Charles Gardner, Albert Kluht and W. A. Lyons.
