Twyla Abernadean McNair, 87 of Earlham, left this world to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at HCI-Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Graveside funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 26th at Thornton Cemetery near Van Meter. Reception will follow the services at Van Meter Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the HCI-Kavanagh House in Des Moines and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 119, Earlham, IA 50072.
Twyla was born on October 29, 1929 to Frank and Mabel (Cassidy) Dougherty in Phoenix, Arizona. She grew up in Arizona and St. Louis before the family settled in Van Meter. She attended Van Meter Schools and graduated Van Meter High School with the class of 1947. On June 18, 1947 she was united in marriage to Lloyd McNair. To this union five children were born.
Twyla worked many years cooking at Earlham Schools, J and J Café in Van Meter and Mary’s Pies in Silver Dollar City. She was a board member at the Van Meter United Methodist Church, spent several years volunteering and attending bible study. She enjoyed playing guitar, crocheting, cooking, gardening, tending to her animals and most especially she loved spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; son, Edward; grandson, Brandon; and brother, Bud.
She leaves behind her children: Marcy of Johnston, Cindy (Tom) of West Des Moines, Dale (Lori) of Earlham and Dawn (Jerry) of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Gina of Van Meter; 16 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Frankie and Santha; sisters-in-law, Loris, Kathy and Sharon; brother-in-law, Barney; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends that will miss her dearly.
