Melvin Earl Faust, 80, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colorado.

Funeral service was held at Hood Mortuary on Sunday, February 13, 2011. The graveside service with full military honors was at Pine River Cemetery, Bayfield, Colo.

Melvin was born to Lulu Thrailkill Faust and Carol Oscar Faust on August 12, 1930 in their rural Dexter home, Madison County, the third child of six boys and four girls. After graduating from eighth grade from Penn Center #9 rural school, he went to high school in Dexter graduating in May 1947, at the age of 16. While in school, Melvin enjoyed playing right guard on the school football team.

Melvin farmed until 1949, when he joined the army Air Force. His duty stations included Texas, Wyoming, two years in Naha Air Force Base, Okinawa, Montana, Colorado, Minnesota, and Colorado Springs, Colo., where he retired with a medical discharge as a master sergeant on Aug. 27, 1971.

While stationed in Cheyenne, Wyo., Melvin drove to Greeley, Colo., meeting Eloise La Vesta Hallsted on a blind date, after which he proclaimed, “She is the girl I am going to marry!” Receiving orders he would be sent to Pennsylvania, Melvin and Eloise decided to elope. They drove all night to Raton, N. M. and were married Sunday morning, March 23, 1952, by the Justice of the Peace.

Education was important to Melvin, and he achieved his dream of a college education in 1979 when he graduated from the University of Colorado, Colorado Spring, with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. He moved to Ignacio, Colo. In 1979 to help his father-in-law, Ored Hallsted, on the ranch.

Melvin was actively involved with the Scouting program for over 17 years, mentoring his three sons and other Scouts in earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He continued his involvement with Boy Scout troop 506 in Bayfield, Colo., where his two grandsons received their Eagle Scout rank, and with his grandson from Nebraska, by presenting him his Eagle rank.

Melvin enjoyed hunting large and small game, and was an excellent marksman. He served as adjutant/treasurer for 20 years with the Disabled American Veterans in Durango, Colo., and was an active member in the Durango Community of Christ Church.

Survivors include his wife Eloise of Ignacio; their four children, Donny Dale Faust of Chandler, Ariz., Billy Carl Faust of Bayfield, Colo., Cindy Lou Faust Korf of North Platte, Neb., and Bobby Earl Faust of Johnston, Colo.; nine grandchildren; eight siblings, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Hood Mortuary of Durango, Colo. was in charge of arrangements.
