Sarah Abigail Slavens, daughter of B. F. and Martha Jane Boyd Fry, was born October 8, 1877 in the Penn Center vicinity of Madison County, Iowa, and passed away February 19, 1972 in the Community Care Center, Stuart, Iowa.

She moved with her family to Adair County, Iowa in 1879, and was graduated from the Lincoln Township School.

On November 27, 1901, she was united in marriage to Ernest Slavens in the home of B. F. Fry, Adair County, Iowa and two daughters were born to this union.

In early childhood and early married life, she attended the Mount Vernon Church. Upon moving to the Earlham vicinity, they attended the Friends Church. In 1936, they moved to Stuart where she later joined the First Congregational Church.

She was always first to help anyone in need and caring for those who were ill. She was always making and creating clothing and hobbies.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and was a Past Noble Grand. She was a member of the Congregational Women’s Fellowship and the Study and Social Club of Earlham.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, one brother, her husband, Ernest, and one daughter, Hazel Mullins.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Max (Martha) Barr, Stuart; two sons-in-law, Max Barr, Stuart, and Gerald Mullins, Earlham; one sister, Ella Belle Walton, Stuart; three grandchildren, Lisle Mullins, Paris, Texas; Mrs. Marvyl Sheriff, Earlham; and Gary Barr, West Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 22 from the First Congregational Church in Stuart. Rev. George Thurman officiated.

Mrs. Kenneth Disney provided the music and Mrs. G. C. Gamerdinger, Mrs. Fred McKee and Mrs. Howard Christensen were in charge of the floral tributes.

Pallbearers were Carl Belden, Fory Bassett, Gene Clark, Garland Roberts, Edward Wheeler and Howard Christensen.

Interment was in South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart.
