Thursday, October 26, 1905Death of A.J. Stiffler
Word was received last Saturday that A.J. Stiffler died that day at nine o’clock a.m., at Salem, Oregon, to which place he had removed about two years ago. Some years before his removal, Mr. Stiffler was prostrated by an attack of paralysis from which he did not recover and it is supposed that was the cause of his death.
Mr. Stiffler was born in Pennsylvania about sixty-five years ago, and came to Winterset with his friends in pioneer times. He enlisted in the 46th Iowa infantry late in the war, and was a brave and patriotic soldier, having been elected as one of the officers of the company to which he belonged.
As a citizen he deservedly won the respect of all for his integrity, public spirit and moral religious life. For many years he was the leading member of the Church of Seventh Day Adventists and on his removal, that organization suffered a loss which has not and may never be supplied.
He had a family of five children, four boys and one girl. The boys are Loren and Allie, who reside in this city, Ratie who recently removed to Des Moines, Rej, who has lived in Oregon for some time, and one daughter, who is the wife of Reverend Larson. The dispatch, which announced the death of Mr. Stiffler, also brought the information that he would be buried in Oregon, and the two sons of this place, started last Monday for Pacific coast to be present at the funeral.

LIEUT. STIFFLER DEAD
Former Winterset Citizen Dies at Salem Oregon. Was Pioneer Citizen
Lieutenant Abram K. Stiffler, for many years a citizen of Winterset, died at his home in Salem, Oregon, Saturday afternoon. The cause of his death is not known what it is supposed to be apoplexy. Twice before he suffered from a stroke of apoplexy, one in 1889 keeping him at the point of death for weeks.
The first news of his illness received in Winterset by his sons were telegrams announcing a serious illness followed by another announcing his death. Albert Stiffler, his oldest son, left on the evening train for Salem. Aratus Stiffler, who is living in Des Moines, came to Winterset the same evening expecting to accompany him West but missed seeing his brother and was delayed in the city over Sunday.
A. J. Stiffler was one of the pioneer citizens of Winterset. He came to Madison county with his father, John Stiffler, from Morning Sun, Iowa, in 1856. He had already learned the trade of shoemaker and after his marriage to Mary Clearwater opened shop in the old Ohio House, a tavern conducted by his father on the site where Will Sumner and Andrew Gaekle now are. He was made first lieutenant of a company of Winterset men recruited in 1863 by Captain John S. Goshorn. He was stationed with his company at Helena, Arkansas, until the close of the war.
After he sold his little farm in Union township in 1890, Mr. Stiffler moved to Winterset. When the Rock Island decided to build to Greenfield it bought of Mr. Stiffler two half blocks just north of the square. He moved to Oregon shortly afterward and bought a fine fruit ranch and farm on the suburbs of Salem, where he was residing when he died.
Mr. Stiffler was for years one of the most prominent members of the Advent church in Iowa and was its leader in this County. His life was an exemplary one hand Winterset never had a better citizen. He leaves a wife, 4 sons and a daughter.
