Melissa, daughter of William and Elenor Abernathy was born in Rockville, Park county, Indiana, Nov. 27, 1852 and departed this life at her home in Murray, Iowa, Oct. 24, 1926: age 73 years, 10 months and 27 days. She came with her parents to Madison county, Iowa, when but 12 years old. Was united in marriage to John W. Guthrie January 31, 1868. He preceded her in death March 13, 1917. They lived on a farm until the year 1900 when they moved to Murray, Ia., which place has been their home since that time.

To this union were born five children: Mrs. Rosy Farr, who preceded her in death May 20, 1921; Mrs. Cora Root, of Rockham, S.D.; Mrs. Myrtle Dudney, Sylvester Guthrie and Mrs. Nora Young of Murray, Iowa. Besides her children she reared her grandson, Gaylen Guthrie, from the tender age of one week old. Her granddaughter, Cora Young has made her home with her for the past five years. Besides her children, she leaves to mourn her going, three sisters, thirty grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and a host of friends and acquaintances.

She was converted at thirteen years of age and united with the United Brethren church. Upon moving to Murray, there being no United Brethren church here, she placed her membership in the Methodist Episcopal church of which she remained a faithful member till death. She was a kind and loving mother, a good neighbor and a friend to all who knew her. Of her going it can truly be said, she will be missed.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Murray, by the pastor, Rev. O. S. Hesseltine, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock after which her remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Murray cemetery.
