CATHERINE "KAY" WATTS JOHNSON, Iowa City, Ia

1931 - 2017

Catherine "Kay" Watts Johnson, 86, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully in her sleep June 14, 2017, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., September 16, 2017 at St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Catholic Church in Madison County, Cumming, Iowa. Inurnment will follow at the church's cemetery. Local arrangements are with Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City.

Catherine Lucy Watts was born on February 2, 1931, in Polk County, Des Moines, Iowa, to Garner and Clara Catherine (Lynch) Watts. She was a graduate of Iowa Public Schools, Madison County in 1945 and St. Joseph Academy, Des Moines, Class of 1949. After high school, Kay continued her education at a Des Moines area business college. On December 18, 1950, she married Donald Francis Johnson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. To this union were born three children: Craig Daniel, Donald Francis Jr. and Jan Kay.

Kay spent the next 22 years on the south side of Des Moines raising their family. In 1975 she moved to Iowa City where she worked at Hawkeye State Bank and The University of Iowa (Business Office and Department of Ophthalmology). Kay retired from UI Eye Clinic in 1996 after 18 years.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raymond and John "Jack"; and a granddaughter Maggie Johnson. She is survived by her three children, Craig and his wife, Mary of Rosansky, Texas, Don and his wife Karen, of Iowa City, Iowa and Jan Lanning of Stillwater, Minnesota. Kay had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to The University of Iowa Department of Neurology or St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Catholic Church, Cumming, Iowa.
