The death of Mrs. Helen Arnold Howell in Grand Junction, Colo, recalls to mind the fact that she was a resident of Winterset for many years. Her father, Josiah Arnold, moved his family from Albany, Ohio to Winterset in 1856, living in the southwest part of town. Mr. Arnold afterward owned the McIlree farm west of town in later years removing to a farm near Greenfield, where he died.
In 1872, Helen Arnold was married to Emerson G. Howell, son of the late Aaron Howell, living here until their removal to Colorado in 1891, a time when that section of the country was new. Two sons and two daughters survive their mother, who died after a month’s illness, aged 68 years. Grand Junction papers speak in highest terms of her life as a mother and a loyal church member.
A brother, Hiram A. Arnold of Greene, Iowa, formerly owner of the Arlington Hotel here and many old residents will recall the family and regret her death.
