Dexter was stunned to learn of the untimely death of Merrill A. Knight, 45, his wife, Regina, 43, and daughter Karen, 15, at their home in Denver, Colorado, on Friday night, April 25. All three were shot and killed by a distant relative, David Early, who was attempting to obtain money from them just four days after his release from prison.

Merrill Knight was born in Dexter. Knight, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wyman Knight, spent his boyhood here and after graduation from the Dexter schools, he attended the State University of Iowa and Colorado University. He was graduated from Denver University and became a most successful lawyer and civic leader in the city of Denver. He was a member of the judiciary committee of the Colorado Bar Association and former president of the Board of Directors of the Denver chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Mr. Knight’s first wife died of polio eight years ago. He was remarried in 1952. During World War II, Mr. Knight served as a Naval officer.

A son, Kenneth 18, escaped, although the crazed Early fired one shot at him as he ran to get help from the neighbors, who helped in the capture of the fugitive.

Mr. Knight is survived by the son, Kenneth, and two brothers, Dr. Edson C. Knight of Marshalltown and Hugh Knight, superintendent of schools at Shelby.
