COL. PHILIP MILLS, Florida

Colonel Philip C. Mills, USAF, Retired, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Venice, Fla., after an extended illness.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 16, at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel. A memorial service in Winterset, and interment at Arlington National Cemetery, will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice (www.tidewellhospice.org) or the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/FLgulf/coast).

Col. Mills was born in Winterset, Iowa, on Sept. 27, 1936, the son of Charles W.H. Mills and Grace E. Clark Mills. His great-great grandparents Clark were among the first settlers of Madison County.

He is a graduate of Winterset High School, where he was quarterback on the football team, a graduate of the University of Iowa, and the University of Iowa College of Law. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and Air Force ROTC. He was married to the former Joan Poots of Newton, Iowa, on June 14, 1959.

Col. Mills had a distinguished career in the Unites States Air Force for 30 years as a Staff Judge Advocate and Appellate Military Judge. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak clusters.

Memberships included the American Bar Association, 50 year member of the Iowa Bar Association, and the Air Force Judge Advocates Association. He was a long time member of the Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas.

He is survived by his daughter, Terry of Venice,Fla.; son, Matthew of San Antonio, Texas; his former wife Joan of Coralville, Iowa & Venice, Fla; son-in-law, Rob Johnson of Coralville; four grandchildren; sister, Ruth Ann Sandrock of Burlington, Iowa; and other family members and friends.
